North Carolina A&T Softball

They Lady Aggies Softball team faced South Carolina State for their first conference showdown of the season. This was a three game series in which the Aggies fell to the Bulldogs in the first game of the series on Friday with a final score of 5-8. The second game on Friday the Aggies seemed to be more focused and won in four and a half innings with a final score of 10-1.

The third game was played on Saturday in which the Aggies came out to a slow start. They did score one run in the first inning, but the teams overall performance was lacking. By the bottom of the third inning, the determination and fire in the player’s eyes had returned and it showed. They scored three more runs in the third to make the score 4-0 Aggies lead heading into the top of the fourth.

The bottom of the fourth inning was another superb offensive inning for the Aggies, as they were able to score five more runs on four hits and two Bulldogs’ errors. This put the pressure on the Bulldogs heading into the top of the fifth inning because it was do or die for them. If they was unable to score at least two runs in this inning, it would be the end of the ballgame due to the mercy rule. The Bulldogs was not only able to score the runs, they could not even get a hit.

The Bulldogs struggled against Aggies pitcher Mohagony Headen, as Headon pitched a no-hitter in the final game of the series. She also pitched the entire second game of the series also, and part of the first game. Headen did not give up an earned run in the eleven full innings she pitched during the three game series. Coincidentally, Headen threw exactly 67 pitches in total in both the second and third games in which she was the sole pitcher in both of those games.

The Aggies will next travel to Garner-Webb for a mid-week double header before returning home this coming weekend to face another conference opponent in Bethune-Cookman. This will be a three game series also with games at 1 pm and 3 pm on Saturday and 12 noon on Sunday.
